Even the
most austere of contemplative
zen says that eating is itself competition and striving, not resting, for it
must
obtain food, and that is the best that can be gotten when Lao Tzu
wants zen to run politics, and Hsien Tao wants it to make immortals, the
most
corrupt of the three. All this is in Creel. To compare China with
Mesopotamia and
the task of divining the future, whether in the pyromancy, sortilege
of
yarrow stalks of China, liver samples in Syria, or Greek emperors
sacrificing animals until they get the answer they want, over and over,
beyond
the three dove, three sheep limit, whether an emperor should fight or
not, or Yeats should go to the dentist, the desire to act rightly is
extracted from the man who does not know what to do. Among the Jews,
Zedekiah at
the Captivity was told to go quietly and
Jerusalem would not be burned, but he was afraid of turncoats in
Babylon, and even told by Jeremiah it would go well he would not go and so all was lost,
himself included, all because he would not believe. He would not believe the
